Most large employers in India receive hundreds of applications for every opening. A recruiter usually spends well under a minute on a first look, and many applications are filtered by software before a person sees them. A clear, focused resume gives you the best chance of getting through both.
Keep it short and easy to scan
- One page if you are a fresher or have under five years of experience; two pages at most for senior roles.
- Use a plain layout with clear headings, one font and enough white space. Fancy templates with columns, icons and progress bars often confuse applicant tracking systems.
- Save it as a PDF unless the employer asks for Word, and name the file sensibly, for example Priya-Sharma-Data-Analyst.pdf.
The sections that matter
- Contact details: name, phone number, a professional email address, city, and your LinkedIn or portfolio link.
- Summary: two or three lines on who you are and what you are looking for, written for this job.
- Experience: most recent role first. For each role, list what you achieved, not just what you were responsible for.
- Skills: the tools, languages and methods you can actually use, grouped sensibly.
- Education and certifications: degree, institution and year. Freshers can add relevant projects, internships and coursework here.
What you can leave out
Many Indian resumes still include a photograph, date of birth, father's name, marital status, religion and a signed declaration. Large employers and multinationals do not need any of this to shortlist you, and leaving it out keeps the focus on your skills. Share personal details only when a verified employer asks for them later in the hiring process.
Show results with numbers
Compare "Responsible for customer support tickets" with "Resolved 40+ support tickets a day with a 95% satisfaction score". The second shows scale and quality. Where you can, add numbers: time saved, revenue influenced, users served, accuracy improved or team size.
Match the job description
Applicant tracking systems rank resumes by how well they match the job description. Read the advert carefully and use the same words for skills you genuinely have, for example "SQL" and "Power BI" rather than only "data tools". Do not copy the whole description or add skills you cannot discuss in an interview; recruiters check.
A quick checklist before you apply
- Spelling, grammar and dates checked, with no gaps left unexplained.
- Your phone number and email address work.
- Links open, and your LinkedIn profile matches your resume.
- The summary mentions the role you are applying for.
