Software Development Engineer III, Recipient Experience

As a Software Development Engineer III, you'll work at the intersection of modern search technologies and distributed systems, collaborating closely with applied scientists to design scalable semantic search experiences. This role offers the unique opportunity to lead technical initiatives that directly impact the daily lives of Amazon customers worldwide, while mentoring engineers and driving innovation in one of Amazon's most visible customer-facing platforms.

Key job responsibilities
- Design and build large-scale distributed systems that power order history search capabilities, ensuring minimal latency and exceptional performance for customers worldwide
- Lead technical initiatives spanning the full software lifecycle from design through deployment, making architectural decisions that balance current constraints with future extensibility
- Mentor and coach engineers on your team, conducting thorough code reviews and establishing best practices that elevate the team's technical standards
- Collaborate with applied scientists, product managers, and cross-functional teams to translate product vision into technical strategy, creating work-backwards plans and three-year roadmaps
- Own team architecture and operational excellence, ensuring systems have proper monitoring, telemetry, runbooks, and retrospective processes while proactively addressing root causes of persistent problems

A day in the life
You'll begin by meeting with your team to identify blockers and guide engineers through ambiguous technical challenges. You'll engage with product managers to translate their vision into technical roadmaps and work-backwards documents, then collaborate with engineering leaders to prioritize initiatives. Throughout the day, you'll work hands-on with engineers across multiple programs, reviewing designs and code to ensure quality. You'll coordinate with Quality Assurance teams to establish robust testing strategies, ensuring features meet high standards before reaching customers.

The Recipient Experience team creates transparent and flexible delivery experiences that customers love. We own highly visible destinations including Your Orders, Progress Tracker, Order Details, and Product Owner Page, along with customer notifications that millions interact with daily.

Basic qualifications

- 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Preferred qualifications

- 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
